Al Chavarria y Grupo Mayo was one of the first Tejano bands to incorporate single-note keyboard leads into their music, a style that has since been copied by many. Their first big hit was in 1976 with the song “Basta De Tu Amor”, composed by Nelson Ned and transposed to a Tejano beat by Al Chavarria. During this era, his popularity earned him the distinguished Mike Chavez Awards for “Song Of The Year” and “Most Promising Band”. In addition, Johnny Canales presented Al with the “Song Of The Year” award.
Grupo Mayo has over 25 albums to their credit, and their romantic smooth style has sustained them to present day. Still enormously popular, the group plays regularly throughout Texas and surrounding states. Al Chavarria Y Grupo Mayo has recorded for such labels as RCA International, Freddie, Joey and Hacienda. Al Chavarria y Grupo Mayo have maintained a strong staying power and their music enjoys a new resurgence as a result of the growing popularity of Tejano Music.
